It is of little surprise that 2 Broke Girls follows the lives of two young girls who are waitresses trying to earn enough money to get along in life. Both girls are in their mid twenties. One of them, Max Black, comes from a broken home and a poverty-stricken mother. Caroline Channing grew up in an environment exactly opposite from Max, but although Caroline had a wealthy childhood she is now just as penniless as Max. Max is street-smart and promiscuous and Caroline, despite having lost all of her wealth, tends to look on the bright side of life although she is sometimes high-maintenance. As the two young women get to know one another better they gradually become roommates and build a friendship. They even have a common goal between them—to do something aside from the Williamsburg diner in Brooklyn where they both work and to open up their very own cupcake shop. Eventually in the second season Max and Caroline do open up their business as they dreamed, but unfortunately things all spiral downwards and they have to walk away from their cupcake shop broker than ever. In the third season of 2 Broke Girls Max and Caroline once again open their business, this time as part of the diner. Caroline goes to work for the Manhattan School of Pastry and Max enrolls in the school.
