The Barbara Hall’s political drama, Madam Secretary, focusses on the life of a smart woman, Elizabeth McCord, who becomes the Secretary of State of the U.S. Government. She is shown balancing her highly complex job with her family life and it makes for an interesting watch. What has added to the appeal of the show is the notion that it is quite accurate in its depiction of many people, places and events. This adds a hint of intrigue to the show and makes it even more palatable. Morgan Freeman is also one of the executive producers of the show along with Lori McCreary. Madam Secretary has already completed its first season and its second season is currently on air.

Of course, the showmakers would have taken creative liberties with the plot and screenplay. This is necessary to make the show more entertaining and fit for television. Let us pass the show through a litmus test to gauge how accurate it is one the overall. We will be randomly picking some scenes and see if they pass the accuracy test.

In the show, when the incumbent Secretary of the State dies, the President of the United States comes in person to offer Ms. McCord the opportunity fill in the position. This is a little daring on the part of the writers to make the President fly over to make the offer. Definitely, Secretary of State is a high position and an emergency may well demand an unusual measure. But, The President, in real life, would have rather done it on the phone. There are many security arrangements that have to be made before a President decides to fly. So, this one does not really depict the reality.

The second thing that does not go well down the fact lane is the two months she is made a secretary. This is not easy to do because the Congress has to agree on all these matters and just getting their consent may take a lot more time than just two months.

The showmakers have to be given their due for designing the set perfectly. They are quite accurate. This has been confirmed by many people who have worked in the original offices. So, the show has been successful in creating the right backdrop and atmosphere of one of the most powerful offices in all of the United States. It also helps for the show to be taken more seriously.

The show has never claimed to be a biography or even a depiction of any of the female Secretary of States, who have graced the office. That doesn’t mean that the audience doesn’t get a taste of reality on the show. Medaline Albright, the Secretary of State from 1997-2001, made a cameo on the show. She is the first lady to have held that position under Bill Clinton. Apart from her, Condoleezza Rice under President Bush and Hillary Clinton under Barrack Obama are the only two other women to ever hold the position. However, the whole character sketch does not seem to resemble in any way to the three women who have held the office in real life, except for some happy coincidences.

Téa Leoni is Elizabeth McCord
Téa Leoni is Elizabeth McCord

For instance, when the show portrayed the blonde Tea Leoni as the Madam Secretary, the viewers’ first thought was that it was going to be similar to the personality of Hillary Clinton. Elizabeth generally takes off her glasses in a certain fashion while speaking and that resembles that of Hillary Clinton. Some of Elizabeth’s crew also has some similarity to the people in Hillary’s staff, including Huma Abedin and Phillipe Reines. Hillary Clinton is married with two kids and so is Elizabeth. However, Elizabeth’s husband is a professor and not a former president. There are also many other differences. Since it is not possible to pinpoint which female Secretary of State she is playing, there is no basis for measuring the accuracy of the facts presented for Elizabeth or her professional and personal life.

Also, the show depicts only a handful of staff running behind Elizabeth, with her secretary trying to keep up with the classified files most of the time. This almost never happens, because a Secretary of State has a ton of staff to take care of everything.

Morgan Freeman has an unbelievable cameo in the show

Since the show directs some limelight on one of the highest positions in the US political arena, the show is most certainly going to have lots of international problems at the fore. However, international issues are quite complex and simple answers from a superhuman Secretary of State simply dilute the importance of the causes as well as the authenticity of the show. This is where the show has made a departure from real life. The Secretary does solve various problems on the show, but not always in conjunction with how the real authorities would do.

However, a particularly interesting incident took place in November, 2015. The writers showed the drone hit on an ISIS executioner named Jihadi Judd. The very same week, America also ordered a similar strike to take out Emwazi, an ISIS operative. Emwazi was a British national and was nicknamed Jihadi John by the British media. However, in the show, the terrorist is shown to be of American origin. This episode was more of a coincidence than a factual insertion into the show’s script.

The show will definitely have the elements of the US polity, and will also, on occasion, showcase personalities resembling important people in the US Senate. However, the show does not claim any factual correctness and that should be kept in mind. Madam Secretary is not necessarily a political satire, but a drama series that highlights an intelligent woman making her way through one of the toughest jobs in the world. She is a good negotiator and has her head in the right place. With such a strong female character in the lead, a good plot and impressive performances from the actors makes for good television entertainment. How close it is to reality? Well, not too close apparently.

The new TV series Mad Dogs is based on the U.K. series of the same name. The original British black comedy aired on Sky1 from February 10th, 2011, to December 29th, 2013, concluding after 14 episodes. The plot revolved around 4 middle-aged long-time friends: Baxter, Quinn, Rick, and Woody. The friends unite on a vacation with another one of their friends named Alvo. Alvo is eventually killed and before long the four friends find themselves increasingly deeper in a network of criminal offenses.

After Alvo is murdered the three begin cleaning a drug boat that is connected to Alvo’s death, so as to protect their own names. During this process they are mistaken as being drug dealers and paid a small fortune. The group of friends learn that they are a part of a Servian mafia drug operation which Alvo was involved in. The series continues on with corrupt police, kidnapping, explosions, more drugs, violence, money, and much more.

The original Mad Dogs was relatively popular and garnered a few different spin-offs. In 2011 Mad Cats was imagined which would feature a very similar plot, except instead of men the primary characters would be women. What everyone is talking about right now, of course, is the 2015-2016 new American version of Mad Dogs. Last year on January 15th the pilot episode was released by Amazon, and the season finally aired again this last January.

The pilot was written by Cris Cole who was also the creator of the original series. Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield, worked together with Cole on the pilot episode. Additional executive producers include Marney Hochman, Suzanne Mackie, Andy Harries, and Charles McDougall. Directors include: John David Coles, Uta Briesewitz, Randall Einhorn, Craig Zisk, Guy Ferland, Ted Griffin, Charles McDougall, Mark Piznarski, Clark Johnson, and Alex Graves. Sony Pictures TV and Amazon Studios gave the series life.

The American Mad Dogs stars Billy Zane, Michael Imperioli, Romany Malco, and Steve Zahn. Other members of the cast include: Allison Tolman, Maria Botto, Rachael Holmes, Phil Davis, and Adria Tennor. Ben Chaplin is another star in the show, and he played Alvo in the original British series. In the American version Chaplin will have the role of Zane. Although the two versions may have a lot of things in common the American pilot takes a different turn at the end of the episode.

Mad Dogs, the American version, also follows a group of friends all in their forties. All of the men feel like they are at a crossroads where they must make important life-decisions. Married, single, and recently divorced, the friends are all at different stages in their lives. The characters from the British Mad Dogs had been friends since high school, and those from the American Mad Dogs were friends since college. In the new series the group again go on an exotic and exciting vacation which leads them on an adventure of sorts. They unite together as part of a celebration for their friend Milo as he retires early. The celebration quickly turns sour and becomes quite dark.

Soon lies, deception, and even murder infiltrate the friends’ lives. The shocking voyage leads to a roller coaster ride that puts their friendships and identities to the test. Now the group will be forced to trust one another, even though they perhaps shouldn’t. Anyone who has had a long-time friendship–and who knows the evolution and challenges associated with such a relationship–will be able to relate to Mad Dogs.

The original series was given a rating of 15 and the new pilot episode was rated 18. The American version was given a rating of 7.6/10 stars on IMDb. So far it seems to be doing fairly well and has been retrieving a lot of interested fans. A few different reviews have said that this TV show provides everything when it comes to entertainment. Some individuals call it realistic and believable. It has also been called intriguing, mysterious, unpredictable, excellent, and even a masterpiece. The actors, writing, plot, location, and virtually everything else have been praised in regards to the series. Although the series is set forth in a beautiful area some who have actually been to Belize were slightly upset that it was not filmed there—but this seems to be a minor issue. The show promises violence, sex, dark comedy, drama, and mystery. The characters are also praised and it has been said that they are multidimensional. According to some reviews the series gives the audience an opportunity to connect with the characters rather than jumping straight into action sequences.

Mad dogs comes to Amazon Prime

There is no doubt that the original and the new version will be compared with one another, especially by those who have already seen the British version. Some individuals scoff at the fact that Amazon calls the series an “original” when it is so tightly based off of another show. There are quite a few people who seem to like them both especially if they liked one or the other. It is important to keep in mind that they were each made for a different audience and that they also have set distinctions. There are other people, however, who claim that the new version isn’t nearly as good as the original and that it didn’t need to be remade. Many people claim that “it’s never as good as the original” and they are “sick of the remakes” which is understandable.

Some of those who disliked the series didn’t like the characters and didn’t think the events which took place were believable. All of the characters seem prone to making extremely unwise decisions which in turn lead to horrible outcomes. According to some this seems very unrealistic, especially considering the fact that the men are middle-aged and have decent jobs. It has also been said that they are trying “too hard” to be young and reclaim their earlier years, which also prompts them to make bad choices. If you enjoy dark comedies like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul chances are slanted in your favor that you will enjoy Mad Dogs–unless you would rather just stick to the original.

The Leftovers is a supernatural television drama series broadcast on the American network, HBO. The show was created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta, based on Tom’s novel of the same name. Tom is also one of the executive producers along with Peter Berg, Sarah Aubrey, Mimi Leder, and Tom Spezialy. The show debuted on June 29, 2014 on HBO, and has since then completed two full seasons. The third season is on its way, and is slated to be the final installment of the show.

Background

Amy Brenneman is Laurie Garvey

The show revolves around the mysterious disappearances of people all over the world. Roughly a hundred and forty million people, which is about 2 percent of the global population, have suddenly disappeared under mysterious circumstances. This global event is termed as “Sudden Departure” and happened simultaneously all over the world at once. The people who disappeared, simply left no traces as to what happened to them. Not even clothing. People who were driving cars disappeared while the vehicle was in motion, leaving their car to crash. Even fetuses disappeared from their mothers’ wombs. Scientists all over the world tried their best to explain the phenomenon, but completely failed to understand what happened. Interestingly, nobody has seen anyone actually disappear. The pets, who did, turned hostile towards humans, and even turned vicious.

The series itself is set after three years of the Sudden Departure. It follows the lives of a family in the fictitious town of Mapleton in New York. Garvey family and their acquaintances are still grappling with the whole situation when it appears that the worst might not be over for them yet. While the first season of the show was set in Mapleton, the second season shifted to another fictional city of Jarden in Texas. After the Sudden Departure, the world’s major religions have lost their followers and simply lost their relevance. The void left by them has been filled by numerous cults that emerged from all corners of the world. The most notable of these cults is Guilty Remnant, which is growing stronger with time. The Garvey family is not immune to these events. Kevin Garvey is the Chief of Police, and has quite a lot on his plate. He is trying to maintain some level of rationality in the society, which is now marred by the grief and cluelessness of losing their loved ones inexplicably. His wife Laurie has joined the Guilty Remnant.

Cast

Justin Theroux is Kevin Garvey

The role of Kevin Garvey Jr. is played by Justin Theroux. The father of two has been hit both professionally as well as personally with the Sudden Departure. It is upon him to maintain order in a society whose structures are increasingly falling apart and new ones are emerging in unprecedented ways. Also, his unborn daughter was among the ones who disappeared. After the event, his wife Laurie has left the family. With his son Tommy leaving for college and his teenage daughter Jill acting out, he is simply clueless as to what he should do about his family breaking up like this. Kevin’s wife, Laurie is portrayed by Amy Brenneman. At some point after the global event, Laurie left her entire family and joined the Guilty Remnant, a cult force that is growing in size and influence. Kevin’s son, Tommy, is played by Chris Zylka. Tommy dropped out of his college and is significantly being influenced by a strange person who goes by the title, “Holy Wayne”. While Kevin’s daughter Jill, played by Margaret Qualley, has been a straight-A student all her life, her relationship with her father has been less than warm.

The former reverend, Matt Jamison, played by Christopher Eccleston, believes the global event to be a Biblical rapture, and is unable to cope with the fact that many sinners were taken, while he, a good Christian was left behind. He self-publishes a tabloid that outs sinners. His sister is Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), who lost her husband, daughter and son in the departure. Matt’s wife, Mary Jamison (Janel Moloney), was paralyzed by a car crash that occurred during the departure. The other notable cast on the show include Ann Dowd as Patti Levin, Michael Gaston as Dean, Max Carver as Adam Frost, Charlie Carver as Scott Frost, Emily Meade as Aimee, Amanda Warren as Lucy Warburton, and others.

Development

HBO was quick to acquire the rights for the development of the series based on Perrotta’s novel even before the novel hit the shelves in August 2011. The network also signed up Perrotta as a writer and executive producer for the show along with other executive producers Ron Yerxa and Albert Berger. By 2012, HBO had brought Damon Lindelof onboard to be the showrunner. By February the next year, a pilot was ordered and by September, HBO decided to produce a 10-episode season for the show.

The first season completely covers the main events from the book. However, the second season is all original content created specifically for the show. The show is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Reception

Margaret Qualley is Jill Garvey
Margaret Qualley is Jill Garvey

The show has received generally favorable ratings from the audience as well as critics. Critics have praised the performance of the actors, and how the show has managed to bring life to its various characters. However, the show is best noted for its portrayal of events that are thought provoking and a commentary on what makes people tick under duress. The show has received a number of award nominations, including Critics’ Choice Television Award, Writers Guild of America Awards, the Satellite Awards, and so on.
It is interesting to note that the show gathered an average response from the audience in its first season. By the second season, it had developed a cult following among its fans. So much so that after the conclusion of the second season, fans demonstrated outside the offices of HBO in Manhattan in a bid to convince them to not give up on the show, and produce a third season. HBO has given the nod for the third season, but it will be the conclusion of the series.

It is of little surprise that 2 Broke Girls follows the lives of two young girls who are waitresses trying to earn enough money to get along in life. Both girls are in their mid twenties. One of them, Max Black, comes from a broken home and a poverty-stricken mother. Caroline Channing grew up in an environment exactly opposite from Max, but although Caroline had a wealthy childhood she is now just as penniless as Max. Max is street-smart and promiscuous and Caroline, despite having lost all of her wealth, tends to look on the bright side of life although she is sometimes high-maintenance. As the two young women get to know one another better they gradually become roommates and build a friendship. They even have a common goal between them—to do something aside from the Williamsburg diner in Brooklyn where they both work and to open up their very own cupcake shop. Eventually in the second season Max and Caroline do open up their business as they dreamed, but unfortunately things all spiral downwards and they have to walk away from their cupcake shop broker than ever. In the third season of 2 Broke Girls Max and Caroline once again open their business, this time as part of the diner. Caroline goes to work for the Manhattan School of Pastry and Max enrolls in the school.

Late Show is an icon in the history of television. So, when David Letterman, the first ever host of the show, announced his retirement, it was almost impossible to think of a replacement. After much speculation, the job went to Stephen Colbert, the host of The Colbert Report and The Daily Show on Comedy Central.

David Letterman had hosted the Late Show for 22 years before he announced his retirement in the April of 2014. The Late Show premiered its first episode in the August of 1993. It was produced by CBS and Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants Incorporated. Letterman’s satire, presence of mind, humor and charm, among other things made the show a grand success. Other than Letterman’s popularity and the ratings of the show, its success can be gauged from the fact that the TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time placed it in the seventh position.

Though The Late Show always had a high viewership, it was experiencing a decline in the recent years. In 2013, 3.1 million people watched the show on an average. This went down to 2.8 million, the following year. There was another area of concern for the show that may have had the network go looking for a replacement. Among all the talk shows on air, the Late Show, had the highest proportion of older audiences. A decision to bring in a younger host may have been made to attract the younger crowd, as well as give a boost to the show to improve ratings.

colbert makes fun of hilary

There is no doubt Colbert was facing sky-high expectations when he took over the legendary Late Show from an equally iconic host, David Letterman. If you do equally well, nobody notices. But, if you have even so much so as a glitch, you are doomed. So, the only real option that Colbert had was to put up a spectacular show and so he did. Undoubtedly, there was pressure, but Colbert seemed absolutely comfortable in his skin as he began his journey as the host of the Late Show.

The show was successfully able to capture the feel of the Late Show, as under Letterman, and that was one of the major factors that Colbert must have been vying for. The other big hurdle that he would have to cross is that he had to separate himself from the past shows that he had done.

The show began with the new host singing the national anthem. The overnight rating of the show indicated that people definitely wanted to sample Stephen Colbert. The ratings were not only high, but showed a little more than a 100% jump over the season premiere of the last season with David Letterman. The press was also all praises for Stephen Colbert. ‘Colbert Shines’ was what The New York Post had to say, while the Los Angeles Times said, ‘Colbert Is Off To a Strong Start’. It is definitely a great start. Nevertheless, the real test for Stephen Colbert will be the ratings for the subsequent episodes. This will show how many people actually like his hosting and actually enjoyed the show.

celebrities in stephen colberts show

Stephen Colbert was visibly ecstatic. So much so that he even broke into a dance. He started the show with a tribute to the man who made it all happen, David Letterman, that too in his own eclectic style. He said “We will try to honor his achievement by doing the best show we can and occasionally making the network very mad at us.” Then there was also a surprise from Jimmy Fallon, his head-on competitor, who wished him luck. Then began the Trump-a-mania. Stephen Colbert started with Donald Trump’s speeches about abstaining from Oreo and then just kept going, leaving the audience laughing.

His long list of Trump jokes later gave way to a stream of guests on the show. The very first guest on the first ever Late Show with Stephen Colbert was George Clooney. Now, he does not know Clooney personally, but he decided to get him a wedding present, after one year of the ceremony. No less, a paper weight that said, ‘I don’t know you’. This particular segment, though interesting initially, later became more of a stretch. Clearly, Colbert needed to work on the substance of his interviews with movie stars, other than talking about their charities. Although a noble cause indeed, that is not what the audience is looking for on this platform.

Though he has donned a new avatar for The Late Show, political satire has always been and is still a big part of Colbert’s repertoire. So, how could he not invite someone from the political arena? He sure did. His next guest was Jeb Bush. Colbert thanked him for joining the show and that was where the niceties ended. One pointed question after another combined with Colbert’s quick wits made the interview one of the highlights of the show. Being a Republican candidate for the post of president, Jeb Bush had been campaigning a lot, and this was where most of the questions came from. He also asked him about how he was different from his brother, by bringing in his own brother in the audience and telling about their differences. Given the fact that Colbert has been into political humor, this was an area he had no problem playing the host to. The first edition of the Late Show with Stephen Colbert ended with a sing-along with Mavis Staples and the band.

bill clinton on colbert late show

The show was recorded for two hours and was edited to fit its one hour format. The show went through quite a long production process of 9 months. It was tightly packed to accommodate as much action as possible to keep the audiences glued. The several months saw a continuous stream of promotions to ensure that there was enough build-up by the time the Late Show with Stephen Colbert actually aired. The network went all out to make the show feel grand and measure up to the institution that the Late Show is. There is a lot of competition in the late night show format and despite a big name, Stephen Colbert will have to carve a niche to keep his audiences coming back for their weekly fix of entertainment. This will redefine the show itself. Everything said and done, it was apparent that the host is more than excited to be doing his job and that is always a good sign. The smart, humorous, accessible and entertaining host that Stephen Colbert is, the show is going to be a crowd puller.

If you are already like Stephen Colbert, then you would find be satisfied with his performance. However, if you are watching him for the first time, you would be entertained and would want to check out his next appearance on the Late Night Show. The show had some glitches but then again, it was just one episode. Given the caliber of Stephen Colbert, these will be ironed out. Another interesting thing to note here is that the show changed its last host in 22 years, and it will be safe to say that Stephen Colbert is also in for the long haul and that a new era of Late Night Show has just begin.

Justin Bieber is a Canadian-born singer and songwriter. His genre of music is pop, typically targeted at teenaged girls. For this reason, he’s seen by many as a teenage heartthrob. Originally a YouTuber with a supportive fan base, Bieber was discovered in 2007 when his current manager accidentally clicked on one of his videos, while searching for a different user. Shortly thereafter, Justin Bieber became an overnight celebrity, teaming up with singer-songwriter Usher to become an international sensation.

In late 2009, Bieber released his studio EP, titled, My World. He later released a full version of the EP under the title My World 2.0 in 2010, after following commercial success of its original release. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut record appear on the Billboard Hot 100. His next two releases—Under the Mistletoe and Believe—each topped the Billboard 200.

In addition to his commercial success as a pop star idol, Bieber also has a successful line of perfumes and colognes. At the time of its release, Someday was one of the most bought celebrity based perfumes of that year, easily surpassing 3 million dollars in less than three weeks. The perfume was made with his large female audience in mind.

The overwhelming success of Bieber’s cologne and perfume line is due to his huge and highly supportive fan base, referred to as Beliebers.  Having followed him since his days as a YouTube star, Bieber’s fan base has only grown in size and adoration for the young artist.

When not in the studio recording music or creating amazing perfumes and colognes, Justin spends his time frequenting The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Together, the two of them have engaged in prank phone calls, dressing Bieber up as a security guard, and tricking their fans into thinking they’re making out.

Most recently, Justin Bieber appeared on Ellen’s show with iconic singer Madonna. Despite their lives being left open for the public through the paparazzi, both Justin and Madonna managed to reveal well-kept secrets otherwise hidden from their fans. Topics for discussion included dating a person and their sibling, getting kicked out of bars, forgetting the person’s name they were hooking up with, and engaging in phone sex.

On another episode of the show, Bieber told Ellen of his upcoming roast on Comedy Central, hosted by Kevin Hart. The two talked briefly about how he might be feeling, before Ellen unleashed a Calvin Klein model, who leaped from a hiding place and pranked the young artist. Ellen commented that since she wouldn’t be on the Comedy Central Roast alongside him, she had to get her prank in while she could. Bieber remained in a slightly shaken state while Ellen and the audience laughed at his reaction to the prank.

In a special sneak peak of his upcoming Roast, Justin Bieber was teased about his rise to stardom, jokingly referred to as the Prince Joffrey of pop by Jeff Ross, a former roast master. The Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber airs Monday, March 30 on Comedy Central. Tune in to see one of the pop’s most iconic singers roasted at the hands of close friends and fans alike.

The Theory of Everything, based on the life and romance of the famed Stephen Hawking, could be gearing up to be one of the biggest winners at the Academy Awards of 2015. The film was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including the coveted nominations of Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Best Actor in a Leading Role. Star Eddie Redmayne, who plays Stephen Hawking in the film, won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama for his performance. And it may not just be the Golden Globes that see the film on top—it could very well strike big at the Oscars. Why? Let’s dive into three major reasons why the film could sweep the Oscars.

Eddie Redmayne’s performance

Redmayne’s performance in the film received almost exclusively positive praise from film critics and audiences. His dedication to the role involved extensive preparation and physical stamina; not only did Redmayne meet with Stephen Hawking himself, he met with several other people living with ALS to ask them about their experiences and get a better idea of the mental and physical aspects of living with the disease. The role required Redmayne to contort his body into seeming paralyzed, which was not only physical difficult but required the consultation of professional physicians to ensure that he did not harm his back or legs.

It features a “hot” social topic

ALS, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease in the United States, is certainly one of the “hot” social topics in recent years. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge raised millions towards ALS research and patient care, and made what was once a somewhat obscure disease a limelight topic. Other media projects, including film and television, are also turning towards ALS for interesting medical cases and potential character drama; for example, the hit Fox show Empire features a main character diagnosed with the disease.

It’s a blend of three awards-heavy genres

While some may write off the film as being in the “terminal illness” genre, which is almost guaranteed to get at least some critical notice if done well, the film actually encompasses three different genres that historically have won big at the Academy Awards: it is about someone with a debilitating illness; it’s also a biographical romance that spans several decades; and it is a drama. These genres combined could make a potent potion for the film’s potential at the Academy Awards—and beyond.

melissa

Melissa McCarthy is best known for her comedic performances in films like Bridesmaids and The Heat, as well as her less critically praised performance in her most recent film, Tammy. How well do you know one of the funniest women in Hollywood? The following are 5 things you probably didn’t know about Melissa McCarthy.

She dabbles in fashion design

McCarthy doesn’t just bring the funny—she can bring the fashion, too! She has designed several dresses and even wore a dress of her own design to the Emmy Awards the year she won for her work on the comedy series Mike and Molly.

She used to be a cheerleader

McCarthy was a cheerleader in high school; in fact, the actress was the head cheerleader on her high school’s team! However, she decided to quit the cheer squad after she began wearing goth clothes and living what she describes as a “goth lifestyle.” While she says that she still loved cheerleader, she didn’t know how to balance out her newfound interests with what was expected of her as a cheerleader.

She is well known for only taking short acting breaks after her pregnancies

McCarthy has two daughters: Vivian and Georgette. The actress only took a short break after giving birth to both children before returning to acting. In 2007, she gave birth to Vivian and returned to work 3 months later to work on Samantha Who. In 2010, she gave birth to Georgette and returned to work on Mike and Molly 4 months later.

She’s related to Jenny McCarthy

Melissa McCarthy doesn’t just share a last name with the famous Jenny McCarthy: they’re related! Melissa and Jenny are actually first cousins. She is the cousin of actresses Amy McCarthy, Lynette McCarthy and Joanne McCarthy.

She’s a “country girl”

McCarthy considers herself a country girl at heart; in fact, she grew up on a farm! She credits this upbringing with her love of animals and physical activity. Among the actresses many early “farm” adventures was an incident where she trapped inside a farm silo and needed assistance to get out.

She might star in the Ghostbusters reboot

McCarthy is currently being courted to star as one of the leads in the upcoming all-female Ghostbusters film. However, insider reports indicate that conflicts between the film’s production and the actress’ current TV and film schedule may present a problem with her being cast.

4 Nitpicky Inaccuracies in The Big Bang Theory

big bang theory

The Big Bang Theory is well known for being stuffed full of scientific and pop culture references—but just how many of these references are true? Let’s look at four, admittedly nitpicky, inaccuracies in The Big Bang Theory.

Sheldon doesn’t know the right “Gremlins” instructions

In the fourth episode of season 3–the Pirate Solution–Sheldon makes a remark about the popular 80s film, Gremlins. He says that the film “baffles” him because the entire premise is based on forgetting simple rules of care. “Just don’t feed gremlins after midnight!” However, in the film, the rule is not to feed Mogwais after midnight; gremlins mutate from Mogwais if they are fed after midnight.

Leonard mislabels yogurt

Towards the beginning of The Bad Fish Paradigm (Season 2, episode 1) Leonard explains to another character eating some store-bought yogurt that what they’re eating is technically not real yogurt, because it “doesn’t have enough live active acidophilus cultures.” However, according to the USDA standards for classifying food products as yogurt, only two other types of starter cultures–and not live active acidophilus cultures–are required. While live active acidophilus cultures can be present in yogurt, they are not used to determine whether or not something can be classified as yogurt.

The wrong Bollywood movie

During one scene in The Bad Fish Paradigm (season 2, episode 1) both Sheldon and Raj are watching TV together inside Raj’s apartment. The audience isn’t shown what is on the screen, but Indian-style pop music is heard in the background. Sheldon asks if the woman in the film is Aishwarya Rai, and Raj says yes; he and Sheldon then argue about whether or not the actress is Rai or Madhuri Dixit. However, the music used during the scene is from a Bollywood movie called Kaho Na Pyari Hai—which has neither Dixit nor Rai in the cast.

Sheldon is no match for the Reinheitsgebot

In the second episode of season 2, The Codpiece Topology, Sheldon is discussing the historical accuracy of drinking mead during the year 1487. He states that the Reinheitsgebot (a centuries-old law) would have made mead unavailable to most of the public. However, the law as Sheldon described it was not fully introduced 1516, well after 1487. This particular law also dealt with the prices and ingredients of beer, and not other drinks such as mead; therefore, mead would not have been affected.

3 Secrets About The Voice You Don’t Know

thevoice

The Voice is one of the most popular reality TV shows currently on the air—and its popularity, at times, even exceeds that mainstay of singing TV shows, American Idol. The Voice, like American Idol, is a singing reality competition with the ultimate goal of crowning the winner with the best voice. Unlike American Idol, the Voice uses its panel of judges to create ‘teams’ who get coaching and other benefits from the judge that decides to take them under their wing. This is just one of the few unique factors that has made the Voice so successful and continues to put it in the limelight of reality television. But just how much do you really know about The Voice? Let’s delve into 3 secrets that might just surprise you!

The show’s producers can do anything they want

It’s a common snipe at reality TV to suggest that a competition must be “rigged,” especially if a competitor that many people feel was more talented didn’t win. (American Idol season 2, anyone?) But it’s less well known that, in the case of The Voice, the show can very well be rigged—and it’s plainly stated in the show’s contract.

The contract clearly states that the show’s producers have the right, at any time, to: ‘cut anyone; bend or break rules at their discretion and script winners.’ This essentially means that the producers are allowed to pick a winner and do whatever it takes to see that winner crowned.

Contestants must legally agree to be potentially humiliated or portrayed falsely

Any competitors on the show must agree to a legal contract that states that the show is allowed to “[portray competitors] in a false light,” and that they may be exposed to ‘public ridicule’ or embarrassment because of the show. The contract also states that the producers reserve the right to send contestants for psychological testing, and then air the results in public.

Voting doesn’t always go off as planned

The show is well known for using various times of voting ballots, including online ballots through the multi-media platform, iTunes. In the show’s last spring finale, however, it was revealed that all votes through iTunes would ‘not be counted’ in the finale because there was apparently a glitch in the system. This caused uproar among fans, who claimed that the “glitch” was merely the producers using their powers to rig the results.
